John Mervin: Risingsun, Ohio Pioneer -2

John Marvin, One of the earliest settlers in the present Risingsun town is a highly respected resident of the place. Like many wealthy influential men, he has paved the way for adversity to success. His excellent ability reflects his credit.

He was from the UK and died on Leicestershire on 11th January 1824. His father Thomas Mavant was a butcher by trade. Our subject has returned to a farm near a small village. I enjoyed only the limited benefits of ordinary schools. He showed the management skills of horses and the ability to care and earned employment early in the work. However, the opportunity of progress seemed to be discouraged by him, he decided to come to the United States. When leaving his young wife, former Miss Elizabeth Riley, he sailed from Liverpool in April 1849 with a ship "Joseph Badger" and a four week voyage landed in New York. A trip to Albany was held from Albany to Buffalo on the rail and arrived at Sandusky from Buffalo where it followed the Mad River railroad and became the only train in the area. His destinations were Avon County and Loraine County, but he mistakenly went to New Haven in Huron County. When I learned his mistake he was walking for Lorain County, he was sick in the Greenfield County of Huron County on the way and was taken care of by friendly English people. For his recovery, he left 50 cents of the amount he saved from his travel income and the new start of life. This money was spent to stimulate his faulty energy for wine. And instead he stayed there and decided to borrow a farm.

In the spring of 1850, his wife met with him again. She was having a difficult voyage. I spent four months on the way and wrecked three times. They lived there for several years, but in the autumn of 1863 I came to Wood County and ran through the wagon. Mervin bought 60 acres of land in Montgomery County District chapter 36 where the village of Risingsun is currently located. At that time the land was partly improved with the dry part and the plank house stood near his present home. However, we had to clean up the rugged part of the farm and there was nothing to do during the first year of stay. However, the rapid development of the region bought prosperity. He still has a terrestrial acre nearby and there are also 10 acres in Jackson County in Seneca County. In 1877, since he occupied, he built a wonderful dwelling in Risingsun. Mrs. Mervin's death, December 9, 1888, brought deep sorrow to this delightful house. Her body is put in Trinity cemetery, Scott County, Sandusky County. Sarah of Seneca County, Mrs. George Young. Risingsun Mary, Mrs. Adam Graber, Perry County farmer Elizabeth of George Perry County, Mrs Frank Blonde, Eliza and Lucy at home. Risingsun Frances, Mrs. Benjamin Bates, Anna, Courtland Essex of the same town, and Hattie, Mrs. Russell Hoover [my great grandmother], In the town of Montgomery.

Mr. Marvin 's parents went to the United States in 1855 or 1968 and was in the town of Greenwich County in Huron County where his father died at the age of 73. His mother then went home with her children in Wood County, but died in Richland County at the age of ninety. Mervin is living all over the six children, all living. Thomas lives in Risingsun. George, in Longley; Elizabeth is a widow of Huron County James Brinson. Hannar married Jon Thompson of Richland County, Emma married John Jenny and John Winder of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mr. Melven has a strong body in young people and is well preserved. His harsh and mild habit is full of his benefits. I like reading, he has an intellectual view on the problems of the times. And, the interest in education of the generation of the high generation leads to the service of several years as the school principal. In principle, he is a Democrat, but he is not bound by partisan relations in the selection of men suited for the local office. He is a lead member of the ME church.
